Jersey General Hospital, located in Saint Helier, is the sole hospital on the island of Jersey. It has a rich history, originally established as a poorhouse with its foundation stone laid in 1765. In 1779, the building was requisitioned by the military due to the lack of barracks on the island. It transitioned to a hospital in 1793 and today boasts 219 beds, providing a full range of major NHS services to the Jersey population, including Radiology, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Neurology, and Cardiology.

During the initial COVID-19 lockdowns starting in March 2020, the hospital faced significant challenges due to its dependence on liquid oxygen deliveries. The pandemic strained the conventional supply chain, leading to unreliable and costly oxygen supplies, putting patient care at risk.

Recognizing the urgent need to enhance its oxygen supply capacity, the hospital sought assistance from Oxysystems.

“During the initial Covid lockdowns, we identified an immediate requirement to upgrade our oxygen delivery capacity at very short notice in March 2020. Oxysystems was able to deliver a complete medical oxygen PSA system that produces 25m³/hr of medical oxygen installed onsite in the hospital with exemplary support from the Oxysystems team. I am delighted to recommend their services.”

Jason Leaney, Engineering Manager

The project, encompassing planning, installation, and commissioning, was completed at record speed. Within months, Jersey General Hospital began producing its own medical oxygen, essential for its operations. The hospital also benefits from comprehensive monitoring, ensuring oversight of oxygen use and ongoing support from Oxysystems.

This shift to onsite oxygen production has resulted in significant monthly savings, allowing funds to be allocated elsewhere. Moreover, this approach is not only economically viable but also environmentally friendly, substantially reducing the hospital’s CO2 footprint and benefiting the island’s environment.

“We are witnessing a global trend where hospitals are transitioning to O2 Medical PSA systems. This shift is driven not only by the systems’ cost-effectiveness and environmental benefits but also by the desire for self-sufficiency during pandemics, such as COVID-19, or similar events that can render conventional supply methods unreliable.” Said:
