Selsea is a family-owned business with a long history in sea life trade and distribution with past experience in commercial fishing. They understand the importance of responsibly catching and caring for fish and shellfish. Today, they source fish from many regions, including Sussex, Canada, the USA, Spain, France, and South Africa. They also receive fish from select European ports like Billingsgate, distributing them throughout the greater London metropolitan area and beyond.
The business handles a variety of sea life, kept in water tanks and transported in containers. Each species requires a slightly different environment to thrive. Typically, a constant supply of fresh seawater is provided to the fish tanks to maintain optimal conditions. However, keeping fish in small spaces can be problematic, as the fresh seawater supply may not deliver enough oxygen, leading to hypoxia and increased mortality during subsequent transport, causing additional losses. Building large water tanks with few fish to maintain high oxygen levels is not economically viable, a challenge also faced by fish farms in open waters.
In the winter of 2021, Selsea sought assistance from Oxysystems. After evaluating the water supply, oxygenation, and salinity, it was evident that the fish occasionally suffered from hypoxia, a common issue. We designed and deployed a skid oxygen generator for fish located under the roof of the storage section of the building. Our turnkey system pipes pure oxygen into the water supply. Each tank is monitored for specific oxygen levels, and the system activates automatically as needed.
Since the oxygen generator for fish was commissioned in January 2022, losses have been virtually eliminated. The overall operation is significantly more efficient, and the system has proven cost-effective through overall savings. Furthermore, Selsea now has comprehensive oversight of their equipment and water environment thanks to advanced water monitoring.
