DWR is a leading multi-disciplinary specialist veterinary referral hospital located in Cambridge, United Kingdom. Established in 2003, it is one of the largest specialist veterinary centers in Europe, renowned for its exceptional clinical care and state-of-the-art facilities. The clinic uses oxygen for anesthesia, in operating theaters, for patient ventilation, as well as in ward kennels and intensive care units.

DWR boasts a highly qualified team of veterinarians, veterinary nurses, physiotherapists, and support staff, all dedicated to the comfort and well-being of their patients, making it one of the best animal clinics in the world.

Employing approximately 350 people in both clinical and non-clinical roles, DWR operates 24/7, 365 days a year. The hospital admits over 10,000 patients annually and receives referrals from more than 780 clinics across the country. The decision to install a dedicated medical oxygen generator followed an efficiency review at the hospital. Previously, DWR relied on a national medical oxygen (O2) supplier for regular deliveries of liquefied O2, a costly option that lacked adequate backup. Delivery issues occasionally forced the postponement of operations, incurring additional costs and delays.

“There were clear savings to be made and for the first time we have complete self-sufficiency and adequate redundancy. Coupled with the financial savings, the excellent technical support that we have received has made the purchasing of an medical oxygen generator from Oxysystems one of the best decisions ever,” said

O2 - Oxygen

After reviewing the operational needs and space allocations, the decision was made to house the entire medical oxygen generator PSA in a 20-foot outside container that delivers 10 m3 of oxygen with a purity of 95% per hour.

The oxygen is supplied directly to the operating theatres and rooms via a pipe system with constant monitoring offering an additional overview of their oxygen consumption per theatre. Additionally, we supplied the clinic with three large oxygen storage tanks and a bottle-filling system with our unique high-pressure station.

Since the system became operational in late 2021, DWR has not only saved money every month but also gained valuable insights into their specific oxygen consumption and needs. This information will be critical for future expansion plans.

In the spring of 2022, DWR approached us to install an additional solution for medical air, further enhancing their self-sufficiency and resilience.

Furthermore, they have unveiled a £15 million expansion plan, which it said will triple the size of the site. The development will increase the practice floorspace to 48,328 sq ft from the current 16,456 sq ft.

Work has already begun on the project, which includes a new critical care hub and imaging suite, plus a seminar room. Sixteen new consulting rooms, taking the practice’s total to 25, are also planned along with separate waiting areas and wards for cats and dogs.
